Trek Mount Toubkal

Challenge yourself by climbing North Africa’s highest peak, Mount Toubkal.

 

Known as the Roof of Africa, this 4,167-metre climb will appeal to those seeking a sense of adventure. The terrain is stunning, and on the way up you will pass waterfalls, a juniper forest and a sacred Muslim shrine. The panoramic view from the top of the mountain stretches from the Sahara to the Atlantic coast and are well worth the effort. End the trip with relax time in Marrakech to celebrate your amazing achievement.

DAY 1

Arrive in Marrakech

Welcome to Marrakech. Depending on your time of arrival, you may have time to explore this unique city. Discover the Djemaa el-Fna square, Bahia Palace, Le Jardin Secret or perhaps Le Jardin Majorelle. In the evening, meet your group and guide for dinner, and get to know your travel buddies before your adventure begins.

DAY 2

Atlas Foothills

Depart at 8am and drive two hours south to Imlil. At 1740m altitude, it’s the gateway to Mount Toubkal. Enjoy a short hike to lunch at Aroumd village, elevating to 2,000 metres, before crossing the Ait Mizane floodplain.

After lunch, the next trail will take around seven hours, elevating a further 1,207-metres by zigzagging along switchbacks set in the beautiful but rugged terrain. Rest tonight as a cosy but basic guesthouse at Neltner known as the Refuge, set into the majestic peaks. After hearty dinner, get an early night in preparation for the summit tomorrow.

DAY 3

Hike to the Summit

After an early breakfast, the summit climb begins. Please be aware involves scrambling across steep scree fields, and you will need to walk at a steady pace to manage the ascending altitude. The total walk will take about 8 – 10  hours. After around four hours, cross onto a vast plateau looming at 4,167 metres; you have reached the Roof of Africa. To the west, glimpse the Atlantic coast, to the east, the plains of the Sahara and to the south, spot the extinct volcano Siroua. Stop on the decent at the Refuge for lunch, then return to the Berber village of Imlil for the night.

DAY 4

Hammam Relaxation

Today you are heading back to Marrakech for some well-earned relaxation. Visit a local hammam, and perhaps add a massage treatment after. In the evening head out to dinner with your group one last time and toast to your adventure.

DAY 5

Farewell

  • Book your flights in and out of Marrakech Menara International Airport (RAK). Please arrive before 4pm on the first day. It’s up to you for Day 5 departure times.
  • Be aware – you need to be capable of hiking in some moderately challenging terrain at altitude. The day of the summit climb will take around 10 hours, possibly more, however your guide will be sure that the trek is paced, with breaks for snacks and drinks. Trekking times will vary depending on the group abilities.
  • Your Morocco Premium Adventures guide’s number one priority is to keep the group safe, so if the climb to the summit is deemed hazardous for any reason, including inclement weather, the trek may descend to the valley earlier than planned.
